Although timekeeping devices are very old, the English clock maker Thomas Tompion (1639-1713) was one of the first who managed to build a mechanical watch, small enough to carry with you. Many inventions done during the next century, such as e.g. the lever escapement, resulted in reliable pocket watches. The size and shape of these watches were perfect to fit in the pocket of the waistcoat when it became the main fashion at the court of Charles II in the 17th century.
It is said that the first wrist watch was made by Abraham-Louis Breguet for the Queen of Naples, Caroline Murat, in 1810. At that time watches were expensive and few people could afford them. Wrist watches for men were first used by the military forces because of the importance of synchronizing military maneuvers during war. Because it is very unpractical to use pocket watches in the hectics of war on a horseback, officers started to strap their watches on their wrists.
Soon the manufacturers of pocket watches made the cases of these watches suitable for use with a wrist trap. It was after the era the First World War that the mass market for wrist watches opened up and gradually prizes started to drop down so that the wrist watch became a common part of everybody's outfit.
At the end of the 1960ies, the first electronic regulated watches were produced and in the beginning of the 70ies, the first digital watches became available to the public, having a led display. Nowadays, most watches sold have an electronic movement, driven by either batteries, running on solar power or on a rechargeable battery charged by a mechanical system that converts the movements of the arm/wrist into electrical energy.
Today watches are available for every kind of purpose from children watches, pilot watches, sport watches to the very expensive mechanical watches with many complications (features) like moon phase, sun rise and sun set, power reserve, stop watch, and so on.
